The Media and the Exploitation Of The War On Terror
Hizb.org.uk Do politicians and the media use and sensationalise the security threat to win popularity and sell stories? Friday 23 February 2007 - 6:30 PM Speakers: Dr Imran Waheed : Media Rep of Hizb-ut-Tahrir Britain Peter Oborne : Writer, Broadcaster and author of the pamphlet the use and abuse of Terrorí Phil Rees : Journalist and maker of Channel 4 documentary ìat Home with Britainís Terror Suspects There has been much speculation about the source of leaked information in the high profile raids in Birmingham. The police have suggested it is the government whoa re spinning. Following the increased security concerns in Britain since July 2005 there has been a spotlight fixed upon the Muslim Community and its Islamic beliefs. Anti-terror policies supposed to calm public concerns, instead seem to heighten them. Jack Strawís veil comments, John Reid asking Muslim parent to spy on their children, Blairís speeches on integration and the war on terror, or Cameron equating Muslims who want Shariah with the BNP- politicians are using a populist rhetoric which heightens mistrust and alienation. Media coverage does little to dispel myths, instead focussing upon maters that further polarise communitiesí with much reporting being misleading or exaggerated. In this public meeting Muslim and non-Muslim speakers will address a community audience with their own views on the questions of why this climate has emerged and how the Muslim community can respond. Later there will be an open floor discussion. Hizb.org.uk
