After grounding its fleet of 12, MD-80 jets, Midwest Airlines is laying off 1,200 employees, or 40% of its work force. The Wisconsin based airline, joins the list of struggling airline companies in the United States, being held down by high fuel costs. As American travel activity decreases, Midwest, like its competitors, has to cut costs to avoid bankruptcy. Midwest will move to cut back on its number of flights and where it concentrates on servicing the country. By not using its MD-80 planes, Midwest will avoid longer trips and higher fuel consumption. Instead, it will focus on more local and East Coast based flights, where its bulk of travelers go to or from. While airlines are currently struggling to stay in business, they are passing on their financial problems to their employees. Midwest is not only cutting jobs, but it is also cutting remaining employees' pay, to try to stay profitable. Of the 1,200 jobs being eliminated, they cover all phases of Midwest operation, including: In Flight, Maintenance, and Admin jobs. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com
