2007年9月18日、ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグ。ハイテクの街として知られるこの地に本拠を置くカーネギーメロン大学の講堂で、１人の教授が「最後の授業」を行った。教授の名前はランディ・パウシュ。46歳。バーチャルリアリティの第一人者と称される人物だ。最後の授業をするにはまだ若すぎるパウシュだが、実はこのとき、彼には長年親しんだ大学に別れを告げざるをえない事情があった。膵臓から肝臓へと転移したガン細胞。医師から告げられた命の刻限は「あと３カ月から半年」。こうしてパウシュの最後の授業は始まった。スクリーンに映し出された演題は『子供のころからの夢を本当に実現するために』。それは、学生向けに講義をするふりをしながら、まだ幼い３人のわが子に遺すためのメッセージだった——。アメリカではネット動画にアップされるやまたたく間に600万ものアクセス数を獲得したという、心揺さぶられるメッセージ。
